In November 2002, she became a disciple of Kanda Sumire, taking the stage name Ayame. In June 2008, she was promoted to futatsume, changing her name from “Ayame” to “Aoi.” In April 2016, she was promoted to shin’uchi. She performs both classics and new works, and in particular, she delves into the character development of various Japanese and Western biographies and fairy tales, such as “Kitasato Shibasaburo,” “Shibusawa Eiichi,” “Aoi’s version of Cinderella,” “The Princess Who Carried a Hachi,” and “Natsume Soseki,” using her unique perspective to create her signature material.
